The Slowest Walker in New York City
I stepped off the subway on 14th,
in the stream of thousands like me,
all rushing, and bumping, and bustling
but where are they all going?
I'm swept away without a second thought,
weaving the traffic like a high speed car.
Nothing can stop me from my imminent arrival.
Not even myself.
Directly in front of my stands a small, frail woman.
Her right hand interlocked with her long time lovers'.
Her left hand is holding a bag of butterscotch candies.
I think to myself, she must be the slowest walker in New York City.
I look for a way around but find none,
she stops to say hello to the local baker,
and the steady flow of traffic comes grinding to a stop.
I let out a groan in agony.
Don't you have anywhere to be I scream?!
She looks at me puzzled and says of course.
My face turns red,
and I think to myself she must be the slowest walker in New York City.
Now I remember that day fondly.
As I step off the station platform,
my wife's hand in mine.
We walk the city streets back to our home of 40 years.
Along the way we say hello to a long time friend.
We met in second grade, and he's been a baker ever since.
I think to myself, maybe I've become the slowest walker in New York City
